An efficient boiler will make a big difference.

If your carbon footprint is important to you, then you might find the fact that heating in a home accounts for about 55% of the total spend in a year on energy bills, so having an efficient boiler will make a big difference.

Modern boilers are very efficient for several reasons, but their main advantage is that they are all condensing boilers.

A condensing boiler has a larger heat exchanger, so it recovers more heat, sends cooler gases up the flue and is more efficient. Sometimes the flue gases can get so cool that the water vapour in the gas condenses out, and even more energy is recovered from the condensing vapour.

So the main benefits of having a new replacement boiler are:

It will make your home more energy efficient

It will reduce your fuel bills

It will cut your household carbon footprint

Boiler types to choose from

If you have a mains gas connection to your home, a gas boiler is likely to be the cheapest heating option.

If you don’t have a gas supply to your home, you could consider a form of low carbon heating such as an air source heat pump or biomass. With the renewable heat incentive (RHI), these may be cheaper overall.

Alternatively, it may be better in the long run to get a gas connection to your home.

Most older gas and oil boiler types are known as regular boilers that have a separate hot water cylinder to store hot water, rather than providing it directly from the boiler.

When we replace your boiler you can have a new regular boiler and keep your hot water cylinder, or we can fit a combi boiler that does not need a cylinder.

A regular boiler is more efficient than a combi at producing hot water in the first place, but then some heat is lost from the hot water cylinder, so a combi may be more efficient overall. Having a combi boiler can also free up space by not needing a water tank.

Choosing the right boiler for you will depend on different things, so we will talk through with you about these things:

Your hot water usage

Large families using lots of hot water are likely to be better off with a regular boiler, whereas smaller households using less may be better off with a combi boiler.

The space in your home

Combi boilers don’t need hot water cylinders, and therefore require less space in your home.

Compatibility with solar water heating

If you are thinking of installing solar water heating, it’s worth noting that many combi boilers are not compatible with this heating system or cannot use it effectively.

Savings

Replacing a gas boiler

The costs for replacing a boiler will vary, but a straightforward gas boiler replacement plus thermostatic radiator valves will typically cost about £2,300, excluding radiators.
